Green Matters
Our Promise to You:
We endeavour to produce our product and run our business at the most sustainable level possible. As we see it, we do not just live not in the era of Web 2.0 but of Life 2.0. We source timber that is FSC certified from UK and European suppliers (note that only 15% of all the world's timber if FSC certified, unfortunately), manufacture in workshops in the UK and Europe, pack and deliver to you. We intend for our product to last and not be thrown out because of a new design trend.
Another Country is made up of real people leading real lives (albeit informed by a highly attuned eye for good design!) who are committed to working and living responsibly. All our beautiful business collateral (designed by Bravo Charlie Mike Hotel) is kept to a necessary minimum, designed to be of generic use and is printed on recycled stock, whilst all our packaging is made of recyclable cardboard with recyclable paper or board inserts.
Our day bed mattress and bolster, floor cushion and seat pad are made Naturalmat for Another Country.
Naturalmat is the only UK mattress maker using certified organic latex and certified organic coir (coconut fibre) . All of the coconuts are grown organically in Sri Lanka on farms that are certified by the Control Union as organic and environmentally responsible. No pesticides or chemical fertilisers are used, instead organic compost is used to encourage a sustainable farming program. It is very important that they are grown organically and sustainably and on farms that practice fair trade.
The latex foam comes from the milky sap from rubber trees (Hevea Brasiliensis trees to be precise!) and is collected every morning and taken along to a marshmallow machine (it's totally true) which pumps air into the latex to create a great vat of foamy white froth just like a giant cappuccino. This is then laid out in deep troughs that are put in a large oven to set. The final product is a wonderfully elastic and supportive material which has an open structure (lovely and breathable) and is naturally hypo allergenic. The best thing about this latex is that at long last Naturalmat have managed to get it certified as organic. This is a worldwide first and they are pretty proud of it, and rightly so.
The organic lambswool used in all the Another Country products comes exclusively from local farms around Devon and Dorset that are certified organic by the Soil Association. The wool is cleaned on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the river Dart. The water is then filtered and cleaned and returned to the river without any environmental impact. The dirt and muck that is washed out of the wool then goes into an anaerobic digester to make organic compost. If this wasn't brilliant enough the lambswool is given and anti dust-mite quality by adding essential oils of lemon eucalyptus and lavender (also certified as organic by the Soil Association) .
As our business grows we intend to stick to our principles and come up with solutions that see us growing sustainably and responsibly.
